Dogs at Tanpits

We realise that dogs are very much part of people’s families, however Tanpits Cottage is very much part of our family so please look after it for us.

We thought it only fair that as a prospective visitor our Information for Dogs should be plainly stated so you can decide if Tanpits Cottage is right for you & your pet/s.

Please can we ask you to:

Clean up after your dog/s - both inside and out. Please bag and bin all deposits as we often have families with children staying at Tanpits. In case you run out, poo-bags are provided in the Dog-Box.

The South Hams is famous for its wonderful walks, countryside and beaches, but alongside that comes rain and mud on occasion. If your dog/s are wet and muddy please use the outside warm dog shower and keep your dog/s in the kitchen until they are clean and dry. If your dog/s don’t like being shut behind a door we have a fixed stairgate between the kitchen and the lounge.

If you like your dog/s to curl up with you on furniture please bring and use your own throws, we have leather sofas so please help us to protect them against enthusiastic paws.

There are lots of towels provided kept on the dog-shelf in the Utility Room. Feel free to wash any throws and towels, but please use the Petwear Wash Bag provided to prevent dog hairs in the washing machine. If you do use the towels provided by us for your dog/s, please ensure they are washed and dry by the time you leave.

Dogs are allowed upstairs if this has been previously discussed with us. We do try to be flexible and recognise some dogs like to sleep near their owners. There is a door which separates the lounge from the stairs, please ensure it is shut during the daytime to stop your dog/s going upstairs unaccompanied. We have lovely bedding so please don’t let your dog/s on the beds unless you have had a conversation with us about bringing your own bedding and we can inform our housekeepers.

If our bed linen is used and found to be covered in dog hairs you will be charged for replacements.

We want to ensure that Tanpits meets the needs of all our guests and their dogs. So with this in mind we feel we need to clarify some of our information on the outside space.

The cottage overlooks its own two-acre field which is for the sole use of our visitors. Tanpits Field has stock fencing along three sides; the other side having a boundary of dense hedges and trees. Please ask if you require any further clarification.

The large wrap around garden at Tanpits is enclosed by a mixture of walls, fences and gates which we consider to be a safe space for most dogs. However on arrival at the cottage we do suggest that dog owners satisfy themselves that the outside areas are safe and secure for their dogs before letting them off lead. It is your responsibility to make sure your dogs are safe whilst outside.

Should you wish to bring an exempted dog to Tanpits, we will need sight of the Exemption Certificate to provide to our insurers. Your own public liability insurance will also need to be current.

Leaving your dog/s alone in the cottage - we would prefer this is only done in the kitchen area and only if you are confident that your dog/s will settle if left alone in a strange place or they are happy in crates. If you know they can be destructive or reactive when they are left alone, or they suffer from separation anxiety, please do not leave them unsupervised for any period. It’s just not fair on your dog/s (or on us if they cause damage).  In the unlikely event of your dog/s causing any damage, this will be taken from your damage/additional cleaning deposit (see conditions).  There is plenty of room to set up a crate if required. We can also recommend local dog-sitters.

Our dog-box has some toys in it for your dog/s to play with, plus a spare lead, bowls and temporary dog-tags. Please return them at the end of your stay.

There is a large dog-crate kept folded up in Luna –Barn. Please feel free to use it. All we ask is that you collapse it and return it to the barn prior to leaving Tanpits.

We have had some incidences of male dogs marking furniture. Please be extra vigilant and if this should  happen use the specialist products kept under the kitchen sink in order to minimise damage and staining. Please do not use harsh chemicals on the leather sofas. Thank you.

There are two vacuum cleaners in the utility room.

We are confident that our guests are responsible dog owners and considerate human beings and will look after Tanpits for us.  This has certainly been our experience to date.

And finally....if you get home and find you have some lovely photos of your dog/s enjoying their holiday we would love to see them and put them on our Facebook page.
